Dutch Language & Culture

Welcome to the homepage of the NTC-department at ISA!

We hope you find the information on this page useful and that it will give you an idea of the Dutch Mother Tongue Programme.

The Dutch Department is part of the International School of Aberdeen and offers students from ISA a well structured programme, attuned to schools and universities in the Netherlands. The Elementary School and Grade 6 is run by a qualified teacher employed by ISA. The school liaises with a fully qualified teacher for Grade 7 and upwards.

We have excellent facilities and use the language programmes for Dutch Language, which are in line with the "Kerndoelen voor de Nederlandse Taal": these consist of Learning Goals set by the Ministry of Education on Dutch language skills for Elementary and Secondary Schools. The ISA library has over 2000 Dutch titles.

Dutch classes are offered at the school to students from Preschool up to Grade 6. For the youngest students in Pre School and Kindergarten classes are integrated within the daily school programme of ISA. For the older students from Grade 1 through to Grade 5 instructions take place both during and after school. The amount of in school instruction will depend on enrolment, student schedules and the availability of the Dutch teacher. The grade 6 programme is offered after school only. Students from grade 7 and above can follow lessons with our external tutor.

All students follow a blend of online learning and a weekly class. We make use of a digital classroom (the ELO) from INIO (Institute for Dutch Internet Education, http://www.inio.nl) The NTC-department is recognised by the Dutch Ministry of Education. In October 2015 an inspector of the Dutch Inspectorate visited ISA and rated the Dutch department as excellent. You can read both reports in the section 'downloads' on this page.

If you need more information, please download the NTC Handbook or contact one of the Dutch teachers: Marleen Grimmer for students up to grade 6 (mgrimmer@isa.aberdeen.sch.uk) and/or Hanneke Klep for students from grade 7 and upwards (hwklep@gmail.com).

Mission

Our mission– within the total, international teaching activities of the International School of Aberdeen – is to allow the students who take part in the NTC classes to not only develop their Mother Tongue but also their Dutch identity. We work towards the ‘Kerndoelen’ – the learning goals for the elementary school – as determined by the Dutch minister of Education.

Our programme aims to provide Dutch students with the possibility to return to regular education in the Netherlands. We therefore use the same textbooks and tests as used in the Dutch schools in the Netherlands. The students are required to work 3 hours a week on their course.

Elementary

In a safe and caring environment each student is encouraged to take an interest in the academic study of the Dutch Language and Culture. All of the classes feature dynamic small groups and the instructional programmes are tailored to meet the needs of every individual child. This will give every pupil the opportunity to reach his/her maximum potential.

Extra costs are involved for participating students.

Middle and High School

Grade 7-9 (VO1, VO2 en VO3)

From grade 7 upwards Dutch students can follow an after school programme with our external tutor Hanneke Klep. The programme is a blend of distance learning and a weekly class.

Our programme aims to provide Dutch students with the possibility to return to regular education in the Netherlands. We therefore use the same textbooks and tests as used in the Dutch schools in the Netherlands. The students are required to work 3 hours a week on their course. Throughout the week the students can contact the teacher to ask questions and hand in work. This ensures they can keep working in their own pace without having to wait for a fresh explanation.

Grade 10 (voortgezet onderwijs klas 4)

In Grade 10 we offer our students the possibility to follow a Pre-IB programme for Dutch, and this is also possible from grade 9. This programme, run by the IBID education (www.ibid.education), is aimed at improving writing skills and learning to analyse literature. The pre-IB programme prepares for the self-taught Dutch A at the IB.

Grade 11-12 (voortgezet onderwijs klas 5 en 6)

Our IB Diploma Programme students have the possibility to choose Dutch A or B for one of their subjects. The Dutch A programme is a Self Taught programme, offered through IBID education. Our High school Dutch teacher works for IBID as well.

Dutch B (foreign language Dutch) is offered through the school.

If you would like more information on any of the courses Dutch for secondary school and the costs involved, please contact Hanneke Klep (hwklep@gmail.com).

„We eten dus eigenlijk bijenkots!“, concluderen zij.
