Service Learning

Preschool and Elementary School

The International School Aberdeen values social responsibility, global thinking and service. Students at ISA have numerous opportunities to engage in these values in various ways throughout the school year.

In the Preschool and Elementary School, individual grade levels organize fund raisers and awareness raising campaigns. The Kindergarten students have conducted bake sales to raise money to support the humanitarian efforts of the Red Cross in Syria, as well as a food drive to support Instant Neighbour in Aberdeen. Each year, the Grade 1 students take leadership in raising money for BBC Children in Need, while the Grade 2 classes have a long-standing relationship with Fergus House, a care home in Aberdeen. In Grade 3, students have organized events to raise money and awareness of the needs of animals, donating to the World Wildlife Federation and the SSPCA. Each December, the Grade 4 classes organise the Shoebox Appeal on behalf of displaced children in Kosovo. The Grade 5 students take the lead in organizing the school's efforts for Comic Relief/Red Nose Day.

The Preschool and Elementary School also take part in school-wide events, raising money for relief efforts in the wake of natural disasters around the world, such as earthquakes and tsunamis.

On occasion, individual students or small groups of interested students will organize their own service learning opportunities. Students who demonstrate such initiative are encouraged and supported by teachers and staff at ISA.

Middle School

Middle school is a very busy place for our students and a time when we encourage them to become more involved with the school community. Throughout the year, students in Grade 8 carry out a number of projects that focus on protecting the environment. This includes undertaking responsibility for recycling within the middle school and Pitfodels House which involves weekly pick-ups of paper, cans and plastics from a variety of different classrooms and offices, and then taking the materials downstairs to the compactor at the back of the school. As a result of 8th grades dedication to this task over the last few years, ISA has made a sizable decrease in the amount of waste being sent to landfill which is not only better for the environment but also saves the school money. But it’s not just internal service opportunities that our students get involved with, Grade 7 has actively supported KIVA for the last 6 years. KIVA  is an international non-profit organisation that connects people through lending to alleviate poverty. Grade 7 students hold fund-raising events throughout the year, and then via the KIVA website, choose individuals to financially support by providing them with micro-loans. These loans are repaid over a period of time allowing Grade 7 to loan the money again and again. At the end of each year, Grade 6 students participate in transitions activities to help support students moving up from grade 5. A key part of this includes writing advice letters on how to survive middle school. Other activities that middle school regularly undertakes includes litter picking in several places around Aberdeenshire, visiting with our pre-school buddies, and planting bulbs and wild flowers around the campus.
