Our students meet with Aberdeen MP

Our students welcomed one of Scotland’s leading political figures this week as part of our studies on Governance and Democracy.

The children from Grade 4 met with Aberdeen MP, Stephen Flynn, on June 8th when he visited the school campus.

Mr Flynn, who has been an MP since December 2019, took part in a question-and-answer session and shared insights into his role as SNP Westminster Leader and MP for Aberdeen South.

Our Assistant Principal, Paul Bertolotto, commented, “We were very excited to welcome Mr Flynn into our classroom. It was a great chance for our students to ask meaningful questions about what the role of a senior MP involves. Mr Flynn was excellent in engaging with the class and in sharing his expert knowledge of the Scottish and UK political landscape.”

We have benefited from a detailed Social Studies focus on Government within which our students have written letters to their MP to share thoughts about possible updates to legislation. We have also learned about the role of the House of Commons and the House of Lords and how important it is to debate complex issues.

The children thoroughly enjoyed a role-play scenario in which they became MPs within a parliamentary debate that was chaired by the House Speaker, Mr Bertolotto himself.

By fostering positive goals and beliefs, the learning environment at ISA stimulates intellectual curiosity and develops positive personal qualities as well as physical and emotional well-being.
